ten ten:
is an evolving musical experiment with its roots in the Japanese folk tradition. Rather than seeking to preserve folk songs as immutable, historical relics, Aki Takahashi interprets them through her own experience, ensuring that they retain that spark of vitality which they had when first created.
When performing solo, ten ten captures the essence of simplicity, as Aki explores the endless possibilities offered through the combination of her expressive vocals and haunting shamisen.
When performing as a group with shakuhachi (vertical bamboo flute), shinobue (transverse bamboo flute), taiko (drums) and other percussion instruments are then added to the mixture. The resulting sound is both rich and vibrant. Infectious rhythms recreate the atmosphere of a boisterous, traditional festival. Melancholy songs offer a glimpse into the ephemeral nature of life, resonating with both beauty and sadness.
